MIR and SIO Host Interventional Oncology Masterclasses
WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) partnered with the Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) to host two masterclasses designed to bring clinicians together for case-based learning, multidisciplinary discussion and hands-on training.
The classes provide physicians with opportunities to advance their expertise in breast and musculoskeletal oncology. Each course combined real-world case discussions with practical training, allowing participants to develop clinical skills and exchange insights with colleagues from across the country.
The breast cryoablation masterclass explored the fundamentals and clinical applications of breast cryoablation, including current research and clinical trials, implementation in practice, pre-ablation imaging, lesion selection, patient workup, procedural techniques and post-ablation imaging. Additional sessions examined emerging applications in advanced breast cancer, research priorities in locoregional therapy and the roles of surgery, neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies and radiation therapy, including its use following breast cryoablation. A multidisciplinary tumor board brought experts together to discuss clinical cases and treatment approaches. Hands-on activities, vendor stations and a case-based station theater reinforced key concepts and practical skills.

The musculoskeletal oncology masterclass provided hands-on training in computed tomography (CT), angiography and hybrid labs, with a focus on supra-acetabular, sacral and sacroiliac joint lesions. Participants practiced CT-guided biopsy and targeted lesion ablation, including cryoablation, in wet and dry labs. Additional sessions covered pelvic and screw fixation, vertebral augmentation, kyphoplasty and radiofrequency ablation. The program also included training on basivertebral nerve ablation, pumps and stimulators.
MIR faculty members leading the masterclasses included Brian M. Cusworth, MD; Heather V. Garrett, MD; Resten Imaoka, MD; Jack W. Jennings, MD, PhD; and Theodore L. Vander Velde, MD. The musculoskeletal oncology courses were held in the new interventional radiology suite in the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza West Tower, taking advantage of its state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
