This month, Barnes-Jewish Hospital unveiled its newest addition: a 16-story patient care tower featuring 224 private inpatient rooms and 56 private intensive care unit rooms. The new Plaza West Tower is designed to enhance access to specialized clinical care and improve the patient experience.

A standout feature of the tower is its advanced imaging capabilities, which include dedicated radiology floors with MRI and CT scanners, interventional radiology suites, ultrasound, and X-ray equipment. These technologies are expected to improve surgical flow and diagnostic accuracy, thereby enhancing patient care.

Vincent M. Mellnick, MD, professor of radiology and vice chair of academic practice at WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, emphasized the importance of the upgraded facilities. “Currently, our South Campus clinical practice is in the Mallinckrodt building, which is near and dear to our heart, but is also approaching 100 years old,” he said in a video interview. “Its physical plan wasn’t built for a lot of our modern equipment, so just walking through here and seeing more space, but also rooms that are prepared for our newest, state-of-the-art equipment, is very exciting,” he continued. “So, we’ll really be cutting edge in terms of keeping radiation dose low and hopefully doing an even better job diagnosing our patients.”

The new tower replaces the former Queeny Tower as part of Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s efforts to improve the care experiences of patients and their families.
