Faculty Members Honored by Academy of Educators
Four faculty members from Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) were recognized by the Academy of Educators at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, an institutional collaboration that fosters a culture of educational excellence and creates a coalition of health science education community leaders.
Matthew S. Parsons, MD, professor of radiology, and Monica Shokeen, PhD, associate professor of radiology, received the Exemplary Educator Award, recognizing those with at least six years of academic faculty service who are actively building legacies as educators through contributions to education and mentorship. Parsons is the director of the neuroradiology fellowship program and assistant director of the diagnostic radiology residency program.
Shokeen serves as vice chair for diversity, equity, inclusion and justice, spearheading efforts to create a community and culture of respect, belonging and empathy in the department. Her work as a principal investigator in the Biophotonics Research Center has led to several recognitions, including being named a Distinguished Investigator by the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research and receiving an International Suffrage Science Award from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences.
Tyler J. Fraum, MD, assistant professor of radiology, received the Rising Star Award, which recognizes those with less than six years of service as faculty in an academic teaching setting who show exceptional promise as educators through their contributions in one or more domains of educational service, leadership or scholarship. He holds appointments in abdominal imaging and nuclear medicine and is a noted educator who received an MIR Distinguished Teacher Award and was inducted into the Academy of Educators in 2023.
Ali Y. Mian, MD, assistant professor of radiology, was inducted into the Academy of Educators. He is a member of MIR’s neuroradiology section and played a leading role in forming a comprehensive pediatric neuroradiology curriculum for medical students, residents and fellows at the School of Medicine. He also serves as the director of the pediatric neuroradiology fellowship program.
Mian joins the academy alongside other existing MIR faculty members including James R. Duncan, MD, PhD; Fraum; Jennifer E. Gould, MD; Cylen Javidan, MD; Mariam A. Malik, MD; Michelle M. Miller-Thomas, MD; Constantine A. Raptis, MD; Anup S. Shetty, MD; Shokeen; Sharlene A. Teefey, MD and Pamela K. Woodard, MD.
Fraum, Mian, Parsons and Shokeen were honored for their respective achievements during the academy’s Education Day on October 15, 2024.
