Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Side-by-side comparison of blood vessels in the knee before and after a genicular artery embolization (GAE).
Pre- and post-intervention

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure for managing knee pain, particularly osteoarthritis, that can potentially delay or even eliminate the need for knee replacement surgery.

  • Patients with mild-to-moderate symptomatic osteoarthritis
  • Those who have had little or no improvement from traditional forms of treatment (injections, medications, physical therapy, etc.)
  • Individuals who wants to avoid or are not candidates for knee replacement surgery
  • Younger patients (typically under 60) who want to delay surgery

Performed by an interventional radiologist, GAE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks abnormal blood vessels in the knee joint that are causing inflammation and pain. This reduces blood flow to the inflamed area, alleviating pain and improving function.

GAE can help delay the need for and improve the outcome of knee surgery. It is also a minimally invasive option for someone who wants to avoid or isn’t a candidate for knee surgery.

Coverage of GAE varies but we will work with you and your insurance company to determine if your plan covers the procedure.
