Excellence in Entrepreneurship at the Celebration of Inventors

Innovation fuels WashU’s dynamic research enterprise, where visionary researchers and entrepreneurs are advancing discoveries that shape future generations. Several faculty members from WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology were recognized among the university’s forward-thinking innovators at the ninth annual Celebration of Inventors. Hosted by the WashU Office of Technology Management, the event honors inventors, researchers and faculty entrepreneurs whose work is making a real-world impact across the WashU community and their respective fields.

Several innovations and commercialization achievements from the past year were highlighted throughout the evening, including the recognition of Zhude (Will) Tu, PhD, professor of radiology and director of the Precision Radiotheranostics Translation Center, who was named a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors. Other MIR faculty were honored for receiving a 2025 WashU United States Patent Award:
- Hongyu An, PhD, professor of radiology and director of the Biomedical MR Center, Cihat Eldeniz, PhD, assistant professor of radiology, and Tyler J. Fraum, MD, associate professor of radiology, for “Free Breathing Dynamic Contrast Enhanced (DCE) Liver MR Imaging”
- Edwin Baldelomar, PhD, instructor in radiology, and Kevin M. Bennett, PhD, associate professor of radiology, for “Compositions of and Methods of Making Ferritin-Based Imaging Agents”
- Adam Q. Bauer, PhD, associate professor of radiology, and Joseph P. Culver, PhD, Sherwood Moore Professor of Radiology and director of the Biophotonics Research Center, forfor “Imaging Systems and Methods”
- John J. Lee, MD, PhD, assistant professor of radiology, and Joshua S. Shimony, MD, PhD, professor of radiology, for “Methods and Systems for Resting State fMRI Brain Mapping With Reduced Imaging Time”
- Arash Nazeri, MD, assistant professor of radiology, for “Methods and Systems for Noninvasive and Localized Brain Liquid Biopsy Using Focused Ultrasound”
