Ippolito Named Distinguished Investigator

Headshot of Joseph E. Ippolito, MD, PhD.

Joseph E. Ippolito, MD, PhD, associate professor for WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR), was selected to receive the Distinguished Investigators Award from the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. This honor recognizes individuals from academic and industry institutions for their outstanding contributions to medical imaging.

An established expert in MRI, Ippolito leads a research lab within MIR’s Biomedical MR Center that merges clinical metabolic imaging, metabolomics and metabolically-driven therapeutics to develop new paradigms in precision medicine. He aims to identify the key metabolic pathways supporting various tumor compartments, understand nutrient distribution among them and develop or repurpose imaging methods and therapies to target these specific areas. Ippolito’s work helped lead to the discovery that sex differences in cancer metabolism may contribute to disparities in cancer incidence and mortality.

Ippolito also serves as director of the Center for Clinical Imaging Research and the diagnostic radiology residency’s research track. He was previously recognized by the Academy in 2017 as part of the Academic Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging.

Ippolito will be honored during an in-person ceremony at the Radiological Society of North America’s 111th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago.
