Imaging Informatics

Imaging informatics is a rapidly evolving field situated at the intersection of medical imaging and information technology. Radiologists with training in imaging informatics are in demand to manage the growth in imaging data and navigate the evolving AI landscape in efforts to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflows, inform key clinical and business decisions, and enhance patient care.

For those looking to add a fellowship credential to their clinical fellowship, this program will allocate time each month for fellows to engage in hands-on experience and didactic learning throughout the year. With this protected time for informatics projects, fellows can tackle various IT infrastructure issues, optimize EHR/PACs workflows, develop AI assessment and adoption programs, and engage in machine learning and AI research.

Prospective fellows seeking an ACGME-accredited fellowship in clinical informatics can explore a two-year fellowship offered by the Institute for Informatics, Data Science and Biostatistics in coordination with WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.

  • Five to eight fellows are accepted into the program per academic year based on availability of release time from the MIR clinical fellowship program
  • Fellows in this program will receive approximately two days per month of release time from their clinical fellowship to participate in this program; additional time outside of the allocated two days will likely be required to complete project work and other program requirements
  • A capstone project with presentation at a national meeting or submission for publication is required for this program

Informatics fellows will have departmental support throughout the program including but not limited to: access to high-speed computing/GPU clusters as warranted, support for presentation and manuscript preparation, mentorship from clinical and research informaticists, and support to engage in IT certifications where appropriate.

Acceptance into a clinical fellowship program at MIR is required prior to application. We encourage applicants to discuss their interest in this program during their clinical fellowship application process.
