Visiting Students

Elective Rotations

WashU Medicine accepts visiting medical students who submit applications through AAMC’s Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) platform. Students have the opportunity to explore their area of interest within radiology, participating on clinical services and in educational conferences, interacting with residents, fellows and faculty in a busy academic radiology department. Clinical experiences are based out of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, primary teaching environments for our residency and fellowship training programs.

Once you confirm your school is a member of the VSLO network, you’re ready to explore radiology rotation options and begin the application process. Please send application materials to the contact listed for each radiology rotation on the VSLO platform. Once your application has been reviewed, you will be notified of a decision regarding acceptance into a rotation and can then begin the formal process of applying through the VSLO and scheduling your rotation.

*Advanced clinical rotations are appropriate for a senior medical student, with students remaining in 1-2 areas of radiology with dictation privileges and acting as junior residents.

Stipend For Economically Disadvantaged Students

This program supports students interested in doing a radiology elective rotation at WashU Medicine who have experienced substantial financial adversity. Accepted participants are given a $2,000 stipend to help offset the cost of travel, housing, fees and incidental expenses while in St. Louis. Details of eligible expenses will be provided upon acceptance to the program.

Applicants who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply for this stipend:

  • Are in good standing at their LCME–accredited medical school and have completed all required core clerkships
  • Received a Pell grant during their education
  • Were approved for the AAMC’s Fee Assistance Program (FAP) as an AMCAS applicant
  • Received a Loan for Disadvantaged Students (LDS) in medical school
  • Are a first-generation college graduate or otherwise experienced substantial financial adversity during their educational career (these represent mutually exclusive categories)
  • Meet all Washington University School of Medicine requirements for visiting students
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply for an elective rotation as soon as possible through the VSLO Platform (you do not need to be offered this stipend to apply for and participate in radiology electives at WashU Medicine.)
  • This application process is separate from the process of applying for the actual elective rotations. If candidates are offered this stipend, they must also apply to perform an elective rotation at WashU Medicine through the VSLO Platform and be accepted into a rotation (see “Elective Rotations” above)
  • The rotation must be completed prior to receiving the stipend
  • Students will be accepted into clinical rotations at WashU Medicine only if space is available during their preferred time period

Required Materials

Applicants interested in receiving this stipend are encouraged to submit the materials below by April 15.

  • Cover letter with a statement indicating specifically why you are applying to our Visiting Elective Rotation for Economically Disadvantaged Students using the criteria in the “Eligible Candidates” section.
  • Recent medical school transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member who has supervised the applicant during a third-year clerkship (this can be submitted by you or by your letter writer).
  • Which elective you are most interested in completing at WashU Medicine

Space Limitations

Due to space limitations, applicants may not receive their first choice of rotation when signing up through VSLO. It is also possible that no radiology elective will be available during the requested time period. If you are not able to complete an elective, no stipend will be granted even if initially offered.

Deadline

Applications submitted after April 15 should be received at least 60 days prior to the starting date of the rotation and will be evaluated on a rolling basis based on rotation availability.

Submit the above materials via email to Dawn Andrew. Be sure to include “Visiting Elective Rotation Stipend Application” in the subject line.
