Pediatric Radiology

Fellows in this ACGME-accredited program are exposed to a variety of classic and complex pediatric pathology. Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology performs more than 100,000 pediatric imaging studies annually, including about 12,000 ultrasound studies and 8,500 MRI exams. Faculty work with fellows on an individual basis, and interaction with pediatricians from other clinical departments in the reading rooms and in subspecialty conferences enriches the experience. In addition, though they do not read out residents, fellows do oversee them when on call.

All rotations occur at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, one of an elite group of pediatric hospitals verified as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). It’s the only pediatric hospital to receive this designation in Missouri and Illinois. The hospital provides a full range of pediatric services to the St. Louis metropolitan area and a primary service region covering six states. In fact, some patients even travel from abroad for specialty care at St. Louis Children’s.

MIR offers a wide range of helpful resources and competitive benefits for trainees.

Our four-year alternate pathway was created to allow international medical graduates (IMGs) to complete four years of radiology training and become eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The required four years of training can be accomplished through a combination of annual training in the following programs: neuroradiologynuclear medicine (two years of training is required), and pediatric radiology.

The American Board of Radiology (ABR) 15-month pediatric radiology pathway strategically accelerates the development of skilled pediatric radiologists, maintaining high standards while helping to meet a growing clinical need.

In this pathway, residents complete a total of 15 months of experience in pediatric radiology (12 core pediatric rotations and up to three pediatric-related rotations) during a standard diagnostic radiology residency. Renowned experts in pediatric radiology will oversee trainees through a breadth of experience across pediatric subspecialty areas, including the following: neuroradiology, body imaging, fetal imaging, cardiovascular imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

Candidates follow the typical ABR exam schedule, earning continuous specialty certification in diagnostic radiology and continuous subspecialty certification in pediatric radiology upon successful completion.
