Perlmutter Receives $3.2M to Study Parkinson’s Disease Brain Inflammation

Joel S. Perlmutter, MD, the Elliot H. Stein Family Professor of Neurology and a professor of radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, received a $3.2 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to investigate the role of brain inflammation in Parkinson’s disease. The project focuses on whether damage to motor pathways leads to inflammation, aiding the spread of Parkinson’s damage throughout the brain, especially to the cerebral cortex where higher-order thinking takes place.
