Mobile Scanner Brings CT Imaging to the Bedside

A portable CT scanner and two employees from Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri

Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR) radiologists at Barnes-Jewish Hospital are now using advanced scanner technology to help bring better patient care to the bedside. Siemens’ latest generation of the SOMATOM On.site mobile head computed tomography (CT) scanner is now rolling through the hospital’s halls — the first unit to be used clinically in the United States.

The new scanner will help radiology staff provide CT scans for ICU patients with head injuries who are too unstable to transport to the in-house scanner. In addition to helping image patients’ head conditions more quickly, the technology will help reduce incidents related to transporting patients in critical condition.
