Joel R. Garbow, PhD, is a professor of radiology and a principal investigator within the Biomedical MR Center (BMRC) at WashU Medicine’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR). As a co-leader of the Garbow/Neil/Ackerman Lab, Garbow’s research interests include brain injury, cancer, radiation, pathology and disease in preclinical small animal models. He joined the BMRC in 2000 as a senior scientist, followed by a faculty appointment in 2005.

Garbow is a member of several professional organizations including the World Molecular Imaging Society and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. In 2019, Garbow was honored as a Distinguished Investigator by the Academy for Radiology and Biomedical Imaging Research in celebration of his high level of achievement in the field of imaging research.

Garbow earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral training at Monsanto Company in St. Louis. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
