AbdominalWilliam D. Middleton, MD, is a professor of radiology in the abdominal imaging section for WashU Medicine’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR). He’s credited as the architect behind the expansion and subsequent international recognition of the ultrasound service at MIR and has passionately promoted the subspecialty nationally.

His textbook, “Ultrasound: The Requisites,” is considered the core text for ultrasound training.
In 2022, Middleton was honored with the Laurence A. Mack Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, which recognized his career of outstanding achievement in ultrasound research.
