Vice Chair, Imaging Sciences and AI Research

Mallinckrodt Endowed Professor in Imaging Sciences
Siteman Cancer Center Pedal the Cause Professor
Director, Center for Computational and AI-Enabled Imaging Sciences

Mark Anastasio, PhD, is the vice chair for imaging sciences and AI research and the Mallinckrodt Endowed Professor in Imaging Sciences for WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (MIR). He is also the Siteman Cancer Center Pedal the Cause Professor and holds additional appointments in Electrical & Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and the Institute for Informatics, Data Science & Biostatistics (I2DB).

He directs MIR’s Computational Imaging Research Center (CIRC) and is the founding director of the Center for Computational and AI-Enabled Imaging Sciences (C2AIS), leading efforts to develop and apply advanced computational methods and AI for biomedical imaging across scales — from single-cell multi-omics to human imaging and clinical data. The C2AIS, which is jointly supported by both WashU campuses, catalyzes the development of integrative methods to better develop a “systems biological” approach for the study and precise treatment of various forms of human disease.

Anastasio previously served as the Donald Biggar Willett Professor in Engineering and head of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of several professional societies and received the 2025 EMBS William J. Morlock Award from the Institute of Electronics Engineers for his contributions to image reconstruction and biomedical imaging technology development.
