About the MIR 3-D Printing Lab

The MIR medical 3-D printing lab offers unique research and educational experiences in using 3-D visualization, 3-D modeling and 3-D printing technologies for multiple medical and surgical applications. Using patient data (CT or MRI scans), we produce both CAD models and tangible 3-D models with high precision and accuracy. We help our clients find solutions to their specific anatomically-related projects. Patient-specific anatomical models are used for visualization, educational training, perioperative surgical planning and simulations. In addition, our 3-D bioprinters can fabricate scaffolds for tissue engineering and drug delivery purposes. MIR 3-D printing lab fosters a cross-disciplinary approach to research and education through its collaborations with various lab groups within and outside Washington University.

Advantages of 3-D printed models

Because the human vision is stereographic, examining tangible 3-D objects over visualizing 2-D rendered models over a screen is significantly advantageous. At MIR 3-D printing lab, we produce life-sized anatomical models from MRI or CT scans of the patient with high dimensional accuracy. Advantages of medical 3-D models we produce include:

Perioperative planning

Patient-specific 3-D models have proven to aid and achieve success in planning surgical procedures especially when the surgical team includes members from different specialties working on a complex procedure.

Patient education

Physicians and surgeons can use 3-D printed models to illustrate medical conditions and surgical procedures to their patients.

Customized implants

3-D printed models are used as molds or templates for producing patient-specific implants for oro-maxillofacial, cranioplasty and other reconstruction surgeries.

Biomedical devices

We also produce jigs, fixtures and customized surgical aids to help clients in their research.
