Multiple myeloma or MM is a type of blood cancer. It affects the plasma cells of the bone marrow, the spongy part inside bones and the source of red blood cells that carry hemoglobin and white blood cells for immunity. Plasma cells are part of the body’s immune system.
In MM, plasma cells grow out of control and crowd out healthy cells. Cancerous plasma cells weaken bones, cause fractures and damage the immune system and kidneys. Although many patients respond to initial treatment with chemotherapy, nearly all patients relapse and die from the disease. There is an urgent need to find treatments to prolong life, and eventually find a cure for multiple myeloma.
