X-ray examination using a barium mixture to help locate disorders in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and the small and large intestines. Also called barium test.

Typical Preparations

Follow any pre-test instructions -- if given to you. Do not eat or drink liquids after midnight before your exam. This means no morning coffee! Do not smoke after midnight -- if you are scheduled for a barium-swallow study. If you wear an appliance/ostomy bag, please bring an additional bag in case a change is necessary. Please let us know if you:
  • Are allergic to barium
  • Are allergic to iodine or other contrast dye used in imaging
  • Are pregnant or think you might be
  • Have an esophageal or bowel perforation
  • Are severely constipated or have a bowel obstruction
  • Have recently undergone a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy
  • Had a barium x-ray procedure recently
