A Message from the Chiefs

The diagnostic radiology residency program at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology is comprised of diverse individuals with a common bond: commitment to the specialty of radiology and to education. The department offers an open and friendly work environment, encouraging a strong collegiality among our residents, fellows, and faculty. Attendings are available and eager to teach. Unusual to most training programs, attendings are known to all residents on a first-name basis.

With a case conference held every morning for residents within each section, in addition to a daily noon didactic lecture, at least two hours of the workday is dedicated to teaching residents. Because residents are exposed to a wide variety and large number of cases, they can confidently leave the program knowing that they have developed a strong analytic approach to the interpretation of radiographic images as well as the ability to perform basic interventional procedures.

Although MIR is well-known for its commitment to research, most residents enter private practice after training, providing an unparalleled network of alumni throughout the world. Research opportunities abound for those who are interested, especially since Mallinckrodt is one of the four centers in the United States to have a PET/MRI scanner installed for clinical and research use.

All residents have the option of attending the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology course in their second or third year. In addition, Mallinckrodt’s annual book fund is one of the most generous in the country. Due to its state-of-the-art, level-one trauma center, Mallinckrodt employs a predominantly night-float-based call system. Residents do not begin call until the beginning of their second year, allowing them time to gain a background in the fundamentals of radiology.

Outside the work day, residents and attendings have bonded through social activities such as a softball league, bowling competition, and annual outing to a Cardinals game. Many other events are planned throughout the year, providing a friendly atmosphere for making lifelong bonds among residents, fellows, and attendings.

We look forward to your application to Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.
