At $37 Million, MIR Ranks 3rd in NIH Academic Radiology Funding

For the third consecutive year, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR) has ranked WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology the third-highest earner in NIH radiology funding among U.S.-based university radiology departments. In federal fiscal year 2024, the department secured over $37 million in funding.

In addition to the department’s achievement, several MIR investigators were named among the top 100 NIH-funded researchers, including Robert J. Gropler, MD; James D. Quirk, PhD; Vijay Sharma, PhD; and Kooresh I. Shoghi, PhD.

BRIMR, an independent nonprofit organization, publishes rankings of institutions, departments and investigators based on NIH funding. These rankings are widely recognized as an indicator of scientific vitality, underscoring MIR and WashU Medicine’s ongoing dedication to advancing health care.

In total, WashU Medicine received more than $683 million in NIH funding for fiscal year 2024, securing the second spot among U.S. medical schools for the second year in a row.
